Katni, MP: In an unusual display of humanity, a severely injured five-foot-long cobra near a temple in Katni has been referred to a higher medical center in Jabalpur for specialized care. The snake sustained serious injuries, including a fractured jaw, broken fangs, and damage to one eye.
Temple Grounds Incident
Local residents had spotted the massive cobra around the Adiyogi Temple premises in Dubey Colony for the past two days, causing widespread concern. On Monday morning, the snake was seen in a weakened and injured state. Fearing for its life, locals immediately contacted snake expert Amit Shrivastava, who arrived promptly and safely rescued the cobra.
Suspected Vehicle Accident
After the rescue, the forest department transported the cobra to Katni Veterinary Hospital. Civil Surgeon Dr. Sumant Verma examined the snake and noted deep injuries to its head, likely caused by a high-speed vehicle collision. The impact was severe enough to break one of the snake’s fangs and damage an eye completely.
Referral for Advanced Care
Doctors provided immediate first aid to stabilize the cobra and alleviate pain. However, given the severity of its head injury and the need for surgery, local facilities were inadequate. Dr. Verma recommended transferring the cobra to Jabalpur Veterinary Hospital for advanced treatment.
Forest Department Actions
DFO Gaurav Sharma confirmed that the forest department has taken the snake under its protection and prepared for its transfer to Jabalpur. Authorities are also investigating the incident to determine whether it was an accident or deliberate harm.
