Mumbai: The long-awaited Versova-Dahisar Coastal Road project is set to accelerate, with the Forest Department granting the necessary permissions for work in the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). This approval clears the way for construction to begin in sensitive areas, ensuring a smoother and faster commute along Mumbai’s western corridor.
Route and Design
Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is working on a 22-km stretch between Versova and Dahisar, which will feature a combination of double-elevated roads and tunnels beneath creeks. The project will also connect to the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, providing relief to commuters on the Western and Eastern Expressways. The entire Coastal Road project will be executed in six phases, with an estimated cost of ₹16,621 crore.
BMC Update
According to Abhijit Bangar, Additional Commissioner (Projects), some construction on municipal plots had already begun, but work in the CRZ was on hold due to the need for multiple clearances, including mangrove and tree permissions. With all approvals now secured, work in the CRZ will commence soon. Bangar confirmed that construction outside the CRZ has been ongoing.
Time and Distance Reduction
Once completed, the Coastal Road will connect Dahisar to Bhayandar via the elevated road and link roads, reducing travel time from the current two hours to just 20 minutes. The total distance will decrease from 33.6 km to 23.2 km. The project, expected to be completed by December 2028, will integrate seamlessly with other major routes in Western Mumbai, including the Coastal Road, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and Bandra-Versova Sea Link.
