CMO Faces Farmers’ and Activists’ Fury in Shravasti Over Hospital Negligence

Shravasti, UP: Protesting negligence in the treatment of accident victims, activists from the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) and Bhim Army joined families of the injured in Shravasti, who have been on a sit-in strike since 12 November. The protest was triggered by alleged lapses in medical care and the unusual step of bringing in stitches from outside to treat the injured at the Ekona CHC.

On Thursday, the activists attempted to block National Highway-730, but the police intervened, bringing them back to Sanjay Park, where a dialogue was held with Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh. After nearly two hours of discussions seated on the ground, an agreement was reached: within two days, a magistrate-level officer will conduct an impartial investigation. During the inquiry, CHC Superintendent Avnish Tiwari will remain on leave, and further action will be taken based on the report. Only after signing the agreement by the CMO were the protesters allowed to disperse.

The incident stems from a severe road accident on 17 October at Ekona Bypass, which left several people injured. The injured reportedly had to wait for necessary stitching supplies, which were brought in from outside due to lack of hospital resources. Families of the victims have been on strike for 22 days demanding accountability.

Thursday’s protest escalated when BKU and Bhim Army activists arrived to support the families. Tensions rose as they moved to block NH-730. Police and local officials intervened and arranged for talks with the CMO.

When Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh arrived at the protest site for the first time in 22 days, the crowd erupted in slogans against him and the “corrupt system,” demanding suspension of CHC Superintendent Avnish Tiwari. Farmers sat the CMO on the ground for negotiations, ensuring that their grievances were formally acknowledged.

The protest highlights growing public frustration over medical negligence and administrative lapses in rural healthcare facilities in Uttar Pradesh.
