CM Yogi Adityanath Warns SP Over Codeine Cough Syrup Case: ‘Bulldozer Will Act, Just Don’t Shout’

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the Assembly over the contentious Codeine cough syrup case, warning that strict action, including bulldozer operations, would follow.

The controversy erupted as SP leaders raised the issue outside the Assembly and during proceedings, alleging hundreds of deaths linked to the misuse of Codeine cough syrup. SP legislators staged protests and accused the government of suppressing the matter. Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana had earlier suggested that the issue be discussed at a later stage.

Question Hour Debate
During Question Hour, SP MLA Atul Pradhan raised the Codeine cough syrup issue, claiming that the main accused in the case had links with the BJP. He alleged that initial action was taken, but enforcement slowed once political connections came to light. Pradhan also questioned why the government, which often talks about “bulldozer action,” had not acted decisively in this case.

CM Yogi’s Response
Responding to Pradhan, CM Yogi Adityanath, who had been seated in the Assembly, stood up with a measured yet firm reply, emphasizing that the government’s action was underway. He clarified that the case traces back to licenses issued during the 2016 SP government, involving distributors and financial transactions linked to SP-affiliated groups such as the Lohia Vahini. Investigations are ongoing, and legal proceedings under the NDPS Act have been initiated in the High Court.

The CM also issued a pointed warning to opposition members: “When the bulldozer acts, don’t start shouting.” His remarks highlighted the government’s determination to pursue the matter rigorously, while cautioning SP legislators against obstructing law enforcement.

Assembly Tensions
The discussion created a tense atmosphere in the Assembly. Finance Minister Suresh Khanna defended the government, stating that no deaths had occurred due to Codeine syrup. Opposition members demanded further discussion, but Speaker Satish Mahana intervened, warning that failure to maintain order could prompt disciplinary action. Eventually, the proceedings resumed smoothly.

CM Yogi’s strong response reinforced the government’s stance on strict action against narcotic misuse while directly confronting political opposition attempts to politicize the issue.
