
Ranchi/Davos: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren made a strong mark at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, where he led the state’s official delegation and held high-level meetings with global industry leaders. In a major boost to Jharkhand’s industrial ambitions, Tata Steel reaffirmed its commitment to invest ₹11,000 crore in the state under new-age green steel technology. On this occasion, CM Hemant Soren was also honoured by the WEF with a prestigious “White Badge” in recognition of his leadership and engagement.
₹11,000 Crore Green Steel Investment by Tata Steel
During a crucial meeting with Tata Steel’s top leadership, the company signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) and a cooperation agreement with the Jharkhand government, committing to a total investment of ₹11,000 crore. This investment will be made under environmentally friendly “Green Steel” initiatives and will use advanced technologies from the Netherlands and Germany.
The proposed investment includes:
- ₹7,000 crore in Hirasa “Ezee and Melt” technology
- ₹1,500 crore in a Combi Mill project
- ₹2,600 crore in the Tinplate expansion project
All these projects are aimed at reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and strengthening Jharkhand’s position as a leader in sustainable steel production.
Focus on Sustainable Growth and Local रोजगार
Chief Minister Hemant Soren said that the Jharkhand government is giving top priority to sustainable industrial development, clean technology and local employment generation. He emphasized that the partnership with Tata Steel will not only take the state’s industrial capacity to new heights but will also play a key role in making Jharkhand a frontrunner in India’s green industrial transformation.
“This investment will strengthen our mineral-based industrial ecosystem while also contributing to national goals of green energy and climate-resilient development,” the Chief Minister said.
Global Technologies and Broader Industrial Cooperation
In addition to Tata Steel, global conglomerate Hitachi also presented its investment proposals in areas such as power systems, high-end grid solutions and advanced infrastructure development in Jharkhand.
The Chief Minister’s delegation highlighted that the new green steel projects will rely on cutting-edge technologies from the Netherlands and Germany, aligning Jharkhand’s industrial growth with international sustainability standards.
Honour from WEF, Sweden Shows Interest
The World Economic Forum honoured CM Hemant Soren with a “White Badge,” and a formal cooperation letter was submitted on behalf of the Jharkhand government. This collaboration will be based on three major themes aligned with WEF’s Centres of Excellence:
- Critical minerals and new energy
- Climate action
- Biodiversity conservation
The state’s Vision 2050 has been described as being fully aligned with WEF’s concept of an inclusive society. Through this partnership, both sides aim to promote long-term cooperation focused on learning, knowledge exchange and implementation-based collaboration.
Sweden also advanced discussions on potential investment in urban transport. As a follow-up to the Jharkhand government’s official visit to Sweden last year, a roundtable meeting is likely to be held in April to explore collaboration and investment opportunities between Sweden and India. The Chief Minister also met Swedish companies with whom discussions had begun during last year’s visit.
Empowering Women’s Political Leadership
CM Hemant Soren and his delegation also met representatives of the World Women Leaders Forum. During the interaction, there was a strong emphasis on empowering women’s political leadership, especially women from marginalized communities. Proposals were discussed to establish a collaborative framework with the Jharkhand government, including:
- Setting up an India chapter of the forum
- Creating a non-partisan common platform for women representatives from all political parties
- Promoting dialogue, capacity building and cooperation among women leaders
