Christmas celebrations turned into a nightmare for thousands of commuters in Gurugram as the city witnessed severe traffic congestion at multiple locations on Thursday. People stepping out to celebrate the holiday found themselves stuck in long jams, with traffic crawling at a snail’s pace for hours.
One of the worst-hit stretches was near the Sirhaul Toll Plaza, where traffic piled up during the evening hours. The situation deteriorated further after the parking facility at Ambience Mall reached full capacity, forcing several vehicles to wait on the main road. This led to massive congestion, affecting both incoming and outgoing traffic.
Hundreds of motorists traveling from Delhi to Gurugram were stranded for extended periods. The traffic spillover was so intense that even the underpass near the mall was completely jammed, leaving commuters helpless. With entry into the mall restricted due to full parking, vehicles exiting the mall also got stuck, creating a bottleneck from both ends.
Despite sustained efforts, the traffic police struggled to clear the jam. Residents shared harrowing experiences, highlighting the scale of the problem. Deepa Singh, a resident of Sector-46, said she left her Udyog Vihar office around 6 pm but remained trapped in the underpass for nearly 40 minutes to cover a distance of just 200 metres.
Confirming the situation, Highway Traffic Inspector Mahabir Phool Singh said the congestion was primarily caused by the mall’s parking being full. “Additional traffic police teams have been deployed to manage the situation, and the mall management has been contacted to coordinate traffic movement,” he said.
The incident once again raised questions over traffic management during peak festive seasons, as holiday crowds and inadequate parking arrangements brought the city to a standstill, leaving commuters exhausted and disappointed on what was meant to be a day of celebration.
