Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh: A major rail mishap was narrowly avoided on Tuesday when the coupling of a passenger train running from Chhindwara to Betul suddenly broke, causing several coaches to detach from the engine. Fortunately, due to the train’s low speed at the time, no casualties were reported.
The incident occurred around 12 noon near the Char Phatak area of Chhindwara. The sudden failure of the technical coupling caused the last three coaches to separate from the engine and the rest of the train, resulting in a jolt that alarmed passengers. The detached coaches remained on the track, while the engine and remaining coaches stopped a short distance ahead.
Railway officials confirmed that the low speed of the train prevented the detached coaches from derailing, averting a potential disaster. Passengers experienced shock and panic, but no injuries were reported.
A railway technical team and senior officials arrived at the site immediately and carried out repairs. Within 20 minutes, the detached coaches were reconnected, and the train resumed its journey.
Railway authorities have ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the coupling failure and will review safety standards to prevent such incidents in the future. Officials emphasized that had the train been traveling at a higher speed, the consequences could have been far more serious.
