Bilaspur Tragedy: 14-Year-Old Girl Commits Suicide by Jumping into Arpa River After Scolding


Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh: In a heart-wrenching incident from Bilaspur, a 14-year-old schoolgirl ended her life after being scolded by her elder sister for using her mobile phone at night. The girl, a 9th-grade student, jumped into the Arpa River in the Sarakanda area, leaving her family and the local community in shock and mourning.

What Happened

The incident occurred late at night when the girl was using her mobile phone. Her elder sister noticed this and scolded her, asking her to switch off the phone and go to sleep. Angered by the scolding, the girl left the house and walked a short distance to the Chhath Ghat on the Arpa River, where she jumped into the river.

Despite the desperate attempts of her family to stop her, she plunged into the river before anyone could intervene. Neighbors reported that the girl’s family ran after her, shouting and trying to prevent the suicide, but their efforts failed. Local youths even attempted to rescue her by jumping into the river, but the darkness and swift currents prevented them from reaching her.

Recovery of the Body

The family immediately alerted the police, and a search operation was launched. Due to the challenging conditions, the search was resumed at dawn with the help of SDRF divers. After nearly two hours of strenuous effort, the girl’s body was recovered from the river. The body has been handed over to her family following post-mortem procedures.

Community Reaction

The tragic incident has left the family and the local community in deep shock. Residents expressed grief over the untimely death of the young girl and have called for increased awareness regarding the mental health of adolescents, particularly the pressures and emotional challenges faced by teenagers.
