Nagpur, Maharashtra: In a shocking development during the 12th-grade board exams in Maharashtra, the Chemistry paper was leaked on WhatsApp. The incident occurred at a school in Nagpur, prompting a police investigation to trace the individuals responsible. Authorities suspect a private coaching center operator may be involved in the leak.
Incident Details
The Maharashtra HSC Board Chemistry exam, held on 18 February 2026, was compromised when the question paper appeared on WhatsApp. The breach was discovered at St. Ursula Girls’ High School and Junior College when a student was repeatedly visiting the restroom. Examination of the student’s smartphone revealed circulation of the Chemistry paper along with potential answers.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Physics paper, conducted on 16 February, had also been circulated on WhatsApp, raising concerns about systemic lapses at the exam centers. The Maharashtra Higher Secondary examinations commenced on 10 February and will continue until 11 March, while Class 10 board exams are scheduled from 20 February to 18 March.
Police Response
Nagpur police have registered a case at Sadar police station. Officers are working to identify the mastermind behind the leak and have focused initial suspicion on a local private coaching center operator. Arrests are being planned to uncover the full extent of the operation.
Board Directives
The Maharashtra education board had issued strict guidelines to prevent cheating, including mandatory ID cards for students and a ban on all electronic devices such as smartphones, Bluetooth devices, earphones, and pagers at exam centers. Despite these precautions, repeated incidents of paper leaks have heightened concerns over the integrity of the board examinations.
Education in Maharashtra falls under the supervision of Minister Dada Bhuse, representing the Shiv Sena quota in the Eknath Shinde government. The board is yet to release an official statement regarding the paper leaks.
