Mathura:
Panic and speculation spread among devotees after reports claimed that silver fittings had gone missing from the sanctum of the world-famous Thakur Shri Banke Bihari Temple. Several videos circulating on social media alleged theft of silver from the temple’s inner threshold, prompting the temple management to issue an official clarification.
The temple authorities categorically denied any theft, stating that the damage to the silver was caused by chemical-based perfumes (itr) offered by devotees during worship.
Chemical Reaction Led to Damage
According to the management, nearly 10.5 kilograms of silver plating had earlier been installed on the sanctum doorway and threshold with the support of a devotee. As part of traditional devotion, worshippers frequently apply perfume directly on the silver surface.
However, investigations revealed that adulterated and chemically treated perfumes available in the market react with silver upon direct contact, leading to corrosion and gradual melting of the metal. In several areas, the silver layer has completely eroded, exposing the wooden surface beneath.
Management Rejects Theft Claims
Dinesh Goswami, a member of the High-Powered Temple Management Committee, said the viral claims of theft were entirely misleading.
“The silver has not been stolen. The damage is purely the result of chemical reactions caused by synthetic perfumes used in service to Thakurji,” he clarified.
He added that the rising price of silver had fueled rumours, which quickly gained traction on social media without factual verification.
CCTV Surveillance to Be Strengthened
To prevent future damage and to reinforce security, the temple administration has decided to install high-tech CCTV cameras around the sanctum walls and the doorway area.
Devotees are also being urged not to apply perfume directly on the temple threshold. The management is considering a structured maintenance and restoration plan to repair the damaged silver plating.
Appeal to Devotees
Temple officials emphasized that while devotion is deeply respected, awareness is equally essential to protect the centuries-old religious heritage.
The management appealed to devotees to cooperate by following the prescribed worship guidelines so that the sanctity and structure of the historic shrine can be preserved for future generations.
