
RAYAGADA, Odisha: A chilling incident has come to light from Rayagada district, where a fifth-grade student allegedly threw a chemical on four seventh-grade students, causing severe burns. The incident occurred when the students were reportedly experimenting with a flammable substance. The chemical caused a fire, severely burning the students, and one of them is in critical condition.
The Incident
The horrific event took place near a government school in the Muniguda police station area. The affected students were conducting an experiment involving a chemical, believed to be thinner, when the fire broke out. The victims, who sustained severe burns, have been hospitalized, with one child’s condition described as critical. The parents of the students have accused the fifth-grade boy of throwing the flammable liquid on the children and setting it on fire.
Authorities Respond
Rayagada Collector Ashutosh Kulkarni expressed surprise that a fifth-grade student had access to such hazardous substances. He questioned how the child managed to procure the flammable liquid. Local residents claim the accused boy targeted the four students by throwing paint thinner at them.
Students’ Experiment Gone Wrong
Kulkarni further revealed that, according to preliminary investigations, the students were attempting an experiment where they used thinner to ignite fire. The experiment went terribly wrong, and the children were burned in the process.

According to police sources, the incident occurred around noon on Monday when the children were playing on the school premises. One of the students had learned how to ignite thinner by watching videos on a streaming platform.
Eyewitness Account
The mother of one of the injured students shared her account, stating that the children had been curious about the fire experiment. “One of the children poured a large amount of thinner onto the fire, and suddenly, it caught fire, spreading to their clothes,” she explained. The victim’s mother further accused the school peon’s son of calling the four students, pouring the flammable liquid on them, and setting them on fire.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, and all four students have been hospitalized for treatment.
