SULTANPUR: The Uttar Pradesh government has transferred several IPS officers on Wednesday, with Charu Nigam being appointed the new Superintendent of Police (SP) for Sultanpur district. Prior to this, she served as the Commanding Officer of the 47th Battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) in Ghaziabad. A 2014-batch IPS officer, Nigam has previously made headlines for her relentless action against land mafias, liquor rackets, and drug traffickers.
Originally from Agra, famously known as the city of the Taj, Charu Nigam completed her education in Delhi and holds a B.Tech degree. Determined to join the civil services while pursuing her studies, she first cleared the UPSC exam in 2010. After a few initial setbacks, she succeeded in the 2013 attempt and received her first posting in Jhansi in 2014. During her tenure there, Nigam took strong action against illegal mining, liquor mafias, and traffickers of cattle and narcotics.
In 2017, she was transferred to Gorakhpur as Circle Officer (CO), where she came into the spotlight following a heated confrontation with a BJP legislator. The incident occurred in Koilwa village, Chiluatal area, where villagers were protesting against illicit liquor and had blocked a road. Nigam personally intervened at the scene, leading to a scuffle with the protesters, during which she sustained minor injuries. Several protestors were taken into custody, and the CO later had a sharp exchange with the local MLA over police action.
Cracking the 50 kg Silver Heist
Later, as SP of Auraiya, Charu Nigam gained recognition for cracking a daring 50-kilogram silver heist in June 2023. The robbery had occurred at the Auraiya border, targeting a local businessman from Agra. Acting swiftly, Nigam formed a special investigation team that uncovered a shocking revelation: the crime had been orchestrated by a collusion of a UP police inspector, a sub-inspector, and a head constable. The stolen 50 kg of silver was recovered from the inspector’s residence, bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Known for her decisive leadership and unwavering stance against crime, Charu Nigam now takes charge in Sultanpur, where law and order challenges await.
