Charging Bottleneck Slows Down Delhi’s Electric Vehicle Push

New Delhi, February 10, 2026: Delhi is rapidly adopting electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its efforts to reduce pollution, but a shortage of charging infrastructure is posing a significant challenge to this green mobility drive.

Huge Gap Between Demand and Supply
According to the latest State Action Plan submitted by the Delhi government to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the city currently has 8,008 EV charging points as of December 31, 2025. However, the actual requirement stands at 36,177 points, leaving a gap of 27,373 charging stations. Even with plans to double the number of points by the end of 2026, the supply will remain far below demand.

Government Targets and Plans
The administration aims to increase the total number of charging points to 16,070 by December 31, 2026. Approximately 7,000 new points are scheduled to be installed this year under a phased implementation plan. These points will be set up in residential societies, shopping malls, hotels, and DMRC parking areas, as well as along streets and footpaths.

Challenges in Installation and Usage
Many street-side and public charging points installed in recent years have been stolen or vandalized, prompting companies and agencies to avoid open-air installations. As a result, users often find charging costs slightly higher than expected. Additionally, charging stations installed within residential societies are currently underutilized, limiting their potential impact.

With EV adoption accelerating, addressing the charging infrastructure gap is crucial to ensure the city’s green mobility plans succeed and pollution levels are effectively curbed.
