Chaos Erupts Over Maharaja Surajmal Statue Installation in Nagaur, Police Deployed from Five Stations

Nagaur – 18 November 2025: Tensions flared in Jodhyasi village of Nagaur district, Rajasthan, after a statue of Maharaja Surajmal was installed at the local bus stand late Monday night. The sudden installation triggered protests from the opposing group, leading both sides to stage sit-ins and engage in heated slogan-shouting.

Police Step In
The situation escalated to the point where law enforcement had to intervene. Officers from five local police stations, along with three companies of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), were deployed to control the crowd and prevent further clashes. Authorities have maintained a strong presence in the area to monitor developments, and the situation is currently under control.

Background of the Dispute
The controversy over the statue had been simmering for over a year. Plans were in place to install statues of Lord Parshuram, Maharana Pratap, and Maharaja Surajmal at the bus stand. However, the unilateral installation of Maharaja Surajmal’s statue by one faction on Monday night provoked the other group.

Residents clarified that the disagreement is not against honoring the historical figure, but rather concerns the choice of location. Some suggested relocating the statue to a different public space within the village. Meanwhile, the opposing faction claims that the Gram Sabha had approved the bus stand site for the statue installation.

Political Angle
Observers note that the controversy is also being viewed through a political lens, adding to the sensitivities surrounding the incident. The police continue to maintain vigilance to ensure peace in the village.
