Central Railway Cracks Down on Fake Local Train Tickets; AI-Based TTE App Launched

Mumbai: The Central Railway Mumbai Division has taken strict measures to curb the rising use of fake tickets and passes on AC locals, general first-class, and mail-express trains. The move targets passengers misusing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate counterfeit tickets.

AI Misuse Under Scanner
To tackle the problem, railway authorities have introduced a dedicated TTE App and an accompanying guidebook. With this tool, ticket inspectors (TTEs) can quickly verify the authenticity of any ticket or pass. The initiative comes after repeated cases of passengers using AI-generated fake tickets, particularly in AC locals and first-class compartments of general locals and mail-express trains. Officials warn that large-scale misuse of AI has led to a surge in counterfeit tickets.

Action Against Offenders
Several incidents of fake tickets and passes in Mumbai AC locals have been reported repeatedly. While FIRs have been filed against offenders, railway authorities say these cases represent only the tip of the iceberg. The TTE App allows inspectors to scan QR codes on online tickets and instantly access detailed information, helping distinguish between real and fake tickets. The app also includes step-by-step instructions for identifying AI-generated counterfeit tickets and passes.

Recent Arrests
Between November 15 and December 25, seven passengers were booked for using fake tickets in general local trains’ AC and first-class compartments. Incidents include three passengers on 28 November and one each on the remaining dates. The app and guidebook will be used to monitor and take action against future offenders.

Railway’s Message to Passengers
Central Railway urges commuters to use only valid tickets and avoid AI-assisted fake passes. The new measures aim to safeguard passenger safety, ensure smooth travel, and maintain the integrity of the railway system.
