CBSE Issues Show Cause Notice to Neerja Modi School in Amayra Suicide Case

Jaipur, Rajasthan: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a show cause notice to Neerja Modi School in Jaipur following the tragic suicide of nine-year-old student Amayra. The notice comes after a detailed investigation by a two-member CBSE committee, which found serious lapses in safety, anti-bullying protocols, and adherence to guidelines.

Ignored Complaints and Lapses in Safety

The investigation revealed that Amayra, a fourth-grade student, had been subjected to bullying for nearly 18 months. Despite repeatedly reporting harassment and derogatory remarks, her complaints were largely ignored. CCTV footage indicates that just 45 minutes before the incident, Amayra sought help from her class teacher five times, showing offensive messages written by classmates on her digital slate. Shockingly, she was not referred to a counselor, violating CBSE’s anti-bullying guidelines and POCSO regulations.

The committee also noted that the crime scene was cleaned before forensic examination, raising concerns about potential tampering with evidence.

Deficiencies in School Security

A surprise inspection conducted by CBSE on November 3 highlighted multiple security lapses. Several students were found without identity cards, monitoring committees were inactive, and national safety guidelines were not followed. The report concludes that the school failed to provide a safe and supportive environment, amounting to a violation of its affiliation by-laws.

CBSE Demands Explanation Within 30 Days

The CBSE has asked the school to explain why penalties should not be imposed under Chapter 12 of the Affiliation Bye-Laws. Possible consequences include warnings, fines, downgrade of affiliation, suspension, or even revocation of affiliation. The school has been given 30 days to submit a detailed response, after which the board will decide on further action.

The Amayra case has sparked widespread concern, with parents and the community demanding accountability and improved safety measures in schools.
