Caught Red-Handed: Panchayat Secretary Arrested for Accepting Bribe in Balaghat

Balaghat, MP: The Lokayukta Police has arrested Yogesh Hirwane, Secretary of Ukwa Gram Panchayat in Balaghat district, while accepting a bribe of ₹50,000. The arrest was part of a trap operation conducted in front of the Panchayat building.

Bribe for NOC

According to reports, local resident Ankush Choukse had applied to the Gram Panchayat for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to construct a building on his leased land. During the process, Secretary Hirwane allegedly demanded ₹1 lakh in exchange for issuing the NOC.

Complaint and Investigation

Ankush Choukse lodged a complaint with the Jabalpur Lokayukta Police Superintendent’s Office, which verified that the secretary had indeed demanded the bribe. Acting on this, the Lokayukta team set up a trap operation and caught Hirwane red-handed while accepting the first installment of ₹50,000.

Legal Action

The 49-year-old secretary, son of Balkram Hirwane, was taken to Behar for further questioning. A case has been registered against him under Sections 7, 13(1)(d), and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Bribe Negotiation Details

According to the complainant, Hirwane initially demanded ₹2 lakh for issuing the NOC. After negotiations, the amount was settled at ₹1 lakh, of which the first installment of ₹50,000 was collected before the arrest.

This swift action by the Lokayukta police highlights the effective measures against corruption at the grassroots level and reinforces accountability within local governance.
