
Panic gripped Kanpur’s Ganga Barrage on Tuesday evening when occupants of a speeding car allegedly rammed into a police checking team, seriously injuring two sub-inspectors and a home guard, before smashing through barricades and fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred around 6:28 pm during a special vehicle checking drive being conducted jointly by the Kohna Police Station and Traffic Police, following strict instructions issued by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for intensified security checks across the city.
Car Accelerates Despite Police Signal
According to eyewitnesses, a black car with four young men onboard was approaching from the Unnao side when police personnel signaled it to stop. The vehicle initially slowed down, but as officers moved closer, the driver suddenly accelerated, deliberately steering the car towards the policemen.
Before the police could react, the vehicle ran over the checking team, knocking them to the ground and causing severe injuries. The accused then broke the barricade and fled towards Bithoor at high speed.
Three Policemen Injured, Two Seriously
Those injured in the attack have been identified as Atal Ghat Chowki In-charge Sanjay Kumar, Sub-Inspector Puran Singh, and Home Guard Harikishan.
- Sanjay Kumar sustained minor injuries and was discharged after first aid.
- Sub-Inspector Puran Singh suffered a fractured left leg.
- Home Guard Harikishan sustained serious injuries.
Both critically injured personnel are undergoing treatment at Hallet Hospital, where their condition is reported to be stable.
CCTV Footage Captures the Incident
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the Ganga Barrage. Police officials said the footage clearly shows the car accelerating towards the police team, highlighting the grave and deliberate nature of the attack.
Police Launch Manhunt
Joint Police Commissioner Ashutosh Kumar confirmed that the CCTV footage is being analyzed to identify the vehicle and the accused.
“Teams have been formed to track down the culprits. They will be arrested soon, and strict legal action will be taken against them,” the JCP said.
Following the incident, the police department has gone on high alert. Additional forces have been deployed in and around the Ganga Barrage, and intensive checking operations are underway across Kanpur to nab the suspects.
The shocking incident has triggered outrage within the police force, raising serious concerns over the safety of on-duty personnel during routine checking operations.
