
Lakhimpur Kheri — In a tragic incident late Tuesday night, a car returning from a wedding ceremony plunged into the Sharda Canal in Lakhimpur Kheri, resulting in the death of five passengers. One person, the driver, survived but remains in critical condition. The accident has cast a pall of grief over the region.
Gate Lock Failure Traps Passengers Inside Car
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle fell into the canal after reportedly losing control near a bridge. Locals stated that the central locking system of the car got jammed, preventing the occupants from escaping as water rapidly filled the vehicle.
Hearing the loud splash, nearby residents rushed to the spot. Using torches for visibility, they searched for the submerged vehicle with the help of a boat. After locating the car, they tied it with ropes and dragged it toward the bank.
Locals Break Glass to Rescue Occupants
In a desperate effort, the rescuers broke the car’s windows to pull the passengers out. All occupants were immediately taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC), where doctors declared five of them dead on arrival. The driver, Bablu, survived but has sustained severe injuries and is undergoing treatment.
Victims Identified
The deceased have been identified as:
- Jitendra (23), resident of Bahraich
- Ghanshyam (25)
- Lalji (45)
- Suresh (50)
One victim remains unidentified.
Community Shocked by the Tragedy
The incident has deeply shocked the local community, with many highlighting the bravery and swift response of residents who rushed to help despite the darkness and strong water currents. Police have taken custody of the vehicle, and further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
