Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has taken a significant step in the ongoing ED-I-PAC case, deciding to live-stream the hearing scheduled for January 14. This decision comes after previous hearings were disrupted by chaos in the courtroom. Only the lawyers directly representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will be allowed inside Court No. 5, while others can participate virtually.
Previous Hearing Disruptions
During the last hearing, Justice Subhra Ghosh had to adjourn proceedings due to disturbances in the courtroom. A large number of lawyers and other individuals entered the court, creating considerable noise and preventing the hearing from continuing. Despite repeated appeals to maintain order, the atmosphere remained unsuitable for judicial proceedings.
Details of the Case
The ED has filed a petition requesting a CBI investigation against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging interference during raids and obstruction of the investigation. The agency has also sought the return of certain documents and electronic items seized during the inquiry. Meanwhile, the TMC petitioned that no party-related information should be leaked by central agencies. The matter was later taken to the Supreme Court, where the Bengal government filed a caveat.
Live-Streaming to Ensure Transparency
The High Court’s decision to live-stream the hearing aims to ensure transparency while maintaining order in the courtroom. By restricting physical presence to only the case lawyers, the court hopes to prevent the disruptions that marred the previous session.
The January 14 hearing is now expected to proceed in a controlled environment, with virtual access allowing the public and media to follow developments without compromising decorum in the courtroom.
