Buxar/Jaipur:
Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh of Bihar’s Buxar district was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry) for his exceptional courage and supreme sacrifice during Operation Sindoor. The honour was conferred at the 78th Army Day celebrations held in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where five fallen soldiers were remembered for their extraordinary bravery.
The gallantry medal on behalf of the late soldier was received by his wife, Sujata Devi, who became emotional while accepting the honour from Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi. The Army Chief paid tribute to soldiers who displayed exceptional valour during Operation Sindoor and counter-terrorism operations.
According to the Indian Army, Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh had been posted with the 237 Field Workshop Company since May 27, 2024. On the night of May 9, 2025, his unit came under intense Pakistani shelling from two directions. Despite the heavy firing, Havildar Singh remained steadfast at his post, displaying remarkable composure and courage.
At around 1:10 am, he spotted a Pakistani drone approaching his position. Immediately alerting his fellow soldiers, Havildar Singh moved into the open area with his rifle and began firing at the drone, undeterred by the ongoing bombardment. During this act of bravery, an enemy artillery shell exploded near his post, leaving him critically injured.
Even while gravely wounded, Havildar Singh continued to provide crucial real-time information about enemy drone movements until his last breath. His presence of mind and selfless actions played a key role in neutralising the threat and saving the lives of several fellow soldiers. He ultimately laid down his life in the line of duty.
Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh was the eldest son of Janardan Singh and came from a family with a strong tradition of service to the nation. His younger brother, Chandan Kumar, is also serving in the Indian Army. Local social activist Pradeep Sharan said that Havildar Singh’s sacrifice would continue to inspire future generations with the values of patriotism, courage, and unwavering dedication to the nation.
The nation salutes the bravery and supreme sacrifice of Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh, whose valour in the face of grave danger stands as a shining example of the Indian Army’s finest traditions.
