Businessman Beaten to Death with Helmet in Connaught Place; Delivery Worker Held in Shocking Delhi Murder

New Delhi, Feb 4: A 36-year-old businessman was allegedly beaten to death with a helmet following a minor altercation with delivery workers in Delhi’s Connaught Place, in a late-night incident that has shocked the capital.

The victim, Shivam Gupta, a resident of Laxmi Nagar in east Delhi, had gone to a party with a friend on the evening of January 2. According to police, the assault occurred near E Block, close to Rajiv Chowk Metro Station, when Gupta reportedly asked a delivery worker for water, triggering an argument.

Investigators said one of the delivery workers repeatedly struck Gupta on the head with a helmet, while two accomplices kicked and punched him before fleeing the scene. Around 1:30 am on January 3, the Police Control Room received a call about an unconscious, bleeding man lying on the road. Gupta was rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, where doctors found multiple blood clots and declared him unfit to give a statement.

He was later shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on January 4 and underwent surgery the next day. Despite brief signs of improvement, Gupta succumbed to his injuries on January 19 after battling for his life for over two weeks.

“My son left home on January 2 to attend a party and never returned,” said his father, Anil Kant Gupta, 61, who owns two shops in Paharganj. “He was my only son and the sole support of the family. We only want justice so that no other family suffers like ours.”

The grieving father said he personally reviewed CCTV footage at the police station, which allegedly showed his son lying motionless on the ground while his friend stood nearby. He accused the main attacker of striking Shivam repeatedly with a helmet in a fit of rage.

Police inspected the crime scene near the parking area, collected blood-stained samples for forensic examination, and reviewed CCTV footage from nearby control rooms. Investigators said medical reports and witness statements have helped advance the probe.

An FIR was initially registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and common intention. Police said additional sections may be invoked as the investigation progresses.
