Varanasi: Uttar Pradesh has received a major boost in the Union Budget 2026 with the announcement of a high-speed rail network. The budget unveiled plans for two new high-speed corridors passing through the state, positioning Varanasi as a key hub.
The proposed network will connect Varanasi to Siliguri via Patna, and eventually link to Delhi, allowing bullet trains to operate along this route. The corridor will feature elevated tracks, with trains running at speeds of up to 350 km/h. Notably, the Varanasi–Siliguri high-speed corridor will include an underground section in West Bengal.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined the government’s plans for high-speed rail in the general budget, highlighting that Mumbai–Ahmedabad will serve as the first operational corridor. In the second phase, seven additional high-speed corridors are planned, including a future extension from Siliguri to Guwahati. This will connect the national capital with the northeast via Varanasi, with spillover benefits for Prayagraj, Lucknow, and surrounding regions, accelerating development initiatives.
Faster Travel, Faster Growth
With bullet trains running at 350 km/h, travel from Delhi to Varanasi will be reduced to approximately four and a half hours, compared to the current 10–10.5 hours. The journey from Varanasi to Siliguri, which currently takes around 17 hours on the Baghmati Express, will also be reduced to about four to four and a half hours. This rapid connectivity will make travel from the eastern part of India to the national capital significantly easier, positioning Varanasi as a major transport node.
CM Yogi Welcomes the Initiative
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the plan to connect Varanasi with the bullet train network. With improved expressway access across the state, the introduction of high-speed trains is expected to generate new employment opportunities, boost commercial development, and enhance religious tourism. The project is being hailed as a landmark initiative for the state’s growth.
