Bulldozer Action Planned on Centuries-Old Syed Baba Mazaar in Etawah After Caretaker Fails to Produce Documents

Etawah, UP: Authorities in Etawah are preparing to take bulldozer action against a centuries-old mazar (shrine) in the Fisher Forest area, known as the Behrad Wale Syed Baba Mazaar, after the caretaker failed to provide required documents. The illegal shrine, constructed on forest department land, has been served a notice following a complaint to the Chief Minister’s office.

Caretaker Fazle Ilahi was asked to submit documentation by 22 January but failed to do so. Once the deadline lapsed, the administration affixed a notice on the shrine. Every Thursday, large crowds gather at the mazar, and Urs celebrations have reportedly been held without official permission.

Faithful Express Concerns
Locals and devotees have expressed distress, saying that blocking access to the shrine is an affront to their faith. The mazar has been visited by generations for centuries, and Urs ceremonies have been held regularly. To restrict access, deep pits have reportedly been dug along the approach roads, prompting heightened security in the area.

Forest Department Response
DFO Vikas Nayak stated that the shrine is located within the Fisher Forest area, which is forest department land. “The mazar came to our notice during routine inspections. Notices have been issued to the caretakers to present any relevant documents,” he said.

Historical Significance
According to historical records, the mazar is believed to be that of Shamsuddin, a commander under Mohammad Gori who was killed in 1194 during the battle in Etawah against Sumer Singh, commander of King Jaichand of Kannauj. The site in Fisher Forest is thought to mark Shamsuddin’s resting place.
