Budaun: A case of interfaith marriage has come to light from Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district, where a Muslim woman, Noorvi, has converted to Hinduism, changed her name to Mahi Kashyap, and married her Hindu partner Rajkumar in a temple. Following the marriage, the couple has released a video on social media, alleging a threat to their lives and seeking police protection.
The marriage reportedly took place on January 16 at a local temple. A video of the couple has since gone viral, in which Mahi Kashyap states that she married Rajkumar of her own free will, without any pressure or coercion. She expressed apprehension about her safety, claiming that both she and her husband’s family are facing threats from their relatives angered by the marriage.
Claims of Threat from Family Members
The incident pertains to Puthi Sarai village in the Binawar area of Budaun. In the video statement, Mahi asserts that she is an adult and has taken the decision independently. She says she fears for her life and that of her husband and his family, alleging hostility from her own relatives following her conversion and marriage.
“I married Rajkumar by my own choice. I love him, and no one forced me into this decision,” she says in the video, appealing to the authorities to ensure their security.
Police Take Cognisance
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Brijesh Kumar Singh has taken cognisance of the viral video. He stated that the woman is an adult and that no one can act against her will.
“The matter is being examined. Based on the facts that emerge during the investigation, appropriate action will be taken,” the SSP said, adding that the Binawar police station has been instructed to look into the issue and assess the security concerns raised by the couple.
The case has once again drawn attention to the challenges and security concerns often faced by couples in interfaith marriages, particularly when such relationships trigger opposition from family members.
