Kishanganj (Bihar): In a major crackdown on cross-border smuggling, the Border Security Force (BSF) has apprehended two individuals involved in gold smuggling from Bangladesh into India. Officials recovered gold worth approximately ₹2.4 crore hidden inside bundles of firewood.
The operation took place on 24 November, when BSF personnel from the 184 Battalion (Kishanganj Sector, North Bengal Frontier) received intelligence about a suspicious individual near the IBFF gate. Ratan Bishra (23), son of Som Bishra from Indira Colony, Bamanbari, Golpokhar, West Bengal, was intercepted carrying bundles of dry wood. Upon inspection, gold biscuits were found concealed inside the bundles. Two mobile phones were also seized from him.
Following Ratan Bishra’s disclosure, the BSF conducted a follow-up operation and arrested the main coordinator, Dhanaji Namdev Bhuje (34), a resident of Malewadi, Atpadi, Sangli, Maharashtra, at Kaltex Chowk, Kishanganj.
Both suspects have been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Baharampur, Murshidabad, for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Background: With international gold prices soaring, Bihar’s Kishanganj and West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur have emerged as major corridors for smuggling, supplying several kilograms of illicit gold daily to various parts of India.
