Born on Republic Day, Named ‘26 January’: Mandsaur Man Whose Birthday the Nation Celebrates

Mandsaur (Madhya Pradesh): In a country where millions celebrate Republic Day on January 26, one man in Madhya Pradesh celebrates not just the nation—but his own birthday as well. Meet 26 January Tailor, a government employee from Mandsaur whose unusual name has turned him into a symbol of curiosity, pride, and national sentiment.

Born on January 26, 1966, the day India celebrates the adoption of its Constitution, 26 January Tailor owes his distinctive name to his father’s emotional decision. His father, Satyanarayan Tailor, a school teacher by profession, was participating in the Republic Day flag-hoisting ceremony at his school when he received the news of his son’s birth. Overwhelmed by the coincidence and patriotic fervour, he decided to name his newborn son “26 January.”

Despite advice from relatives and acquaintances to choose a more conventional name, the father stood firm. As a result, the name “26 January” was officially recorded in all school and government documents—a rarity that would shape the boy’s life in unexpected ways.

From Childhood Teasing to National Recognition

Growing up, 26 January Tailor often became the subject of jokes and curiosity. Friends shortened his name to “26,” and strangers would smile or laugh in disbelief upon hearing it. The challenges continued into adulthood, especially during official procedures, where authorities often doubted the authenticity of his documents due to the unusual name.

Today, at nearly 60 years of age, 26 January Tailor works as a Class-IV employee at DIET College, Mandsaur. With time, he has learned to embrace his identity, turning what once felt like a burden into a badge of honour.

A Name That Brings Unique Identity

Though the name caused administrative hurdles, it also gave him a distinct identity. Wherever he goes, people remember him instantly. Colleagues affectionately call out to him as “Chhabbis… Chhabbis…,” and on Republic Day, he becomes a local celebrity.

In fact, wishes start pouring in days before January 26. Friends, colleagues, and even strangers congratulate him, and on Republic Day itself, people often seek him out for conversations and selfies. Media attention has become an annual tradition.

Reflecting on his journey, 26 January Tailor says the struggles associated with his name feel insignificant compared to the joy of sharing his birthday with the nation’s most important constitutional celebration. “When the entire country celebrates my birthday as Republic Day, it fills me with pride,” he says.

His story is a reminder that sometimes, a name can carry not just an identity—but the spirit of a nation.
