Black Magic, Rituals and an Egg: How a Superstition Sparked Violent Clash in Bengaluru, Police Register Case

Bengaluru:
A bizarre case of superstition turned into a violent street fight in the IT city after a neighbor objected to an egg used in an “evil-eye removal ritual” being thrown at a roadside junction. What began as a minor altercation quickly escalated into a full-blown brawl, leaving multiple people injured and prompting police intervention.

Ritual to Ward Off Evil Eye Turns Ugly

The incident occurred on November 11 in Avaluahalli, Mysuru Road. According to police, 51-year-old Geetha Shankar performed a traditional ritual to ward off the evil eye from her granddaughter, who had recently fallen ill after slipping at home.

Following local customs, she used an egg to perform the ritual between 10:00 and 10:30 am and then threw the egg at a nearby three-way junction, believing it to be part of the cleansing process.

Neighbor Confronts Woman Over the Egg

As soon as Geetha began to head back home with the child, her neighbor Hanumantayya B. stopped her and questioned why she had thrown the egg on the road.

Geetha told him it was part of the ritual, but the explanation reportedly angered him.
Geetha alleges that Hanumantayya assaulted her with a slipper. When her husband Shankar rushed to rescue her, Hanumantayya and his family members allegedly attacked him as well.

Street Brawl Leaves Both Sides Injured

Hearing the commotion, members of Geetha’s family also came out and retaliated, leading to a violent street-side clash between both families.
Residents informed police as the altercation grew intense.

Both sides suffered injuries and were taken to a nearby clinic for treatment. Each has filed FIRs against the other.

Neighbor Alleges Black Magic

In his complaint, Hanumantayya claimed that Geetha frequently breaks eggs outside his house and performs black magic rituals.
He alleged:

  • She throws ritual items near his home
  • Her actions are affecting the health of his children
  • He has warned her several times but she continues the practice

He insists that Geetha’s rituals have caused problems in his household and that he only confronted her out of concern.

Police Begin Probe

Police have registered cross cases following the violent clash and are investigating the accusations from both sides — superstition, black magic claims, and assault.

Officers say they will examine:

  • CCTV footage
  • Witness statements
  • The sequence of events leading to the street fight

The incident has shocked residents of the area, highlighting how deep-rooted superstitions can still trigger major conflicts—even in a metropolitan city like Bengaluru.
