Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi-led central government, calling the reported trade deal with the United States a “black day for India” and alleging that it would harm farmers and fuel inflation.
Addressing reporters in Lucknow, Singh accused the BJP government of bowing to American pressure and compromising national interests. He claimed the agreement would lay the foundation for rising prices and the “ruin of Indian farmers.”
Singh said the most surprising aspect of the deal was that its details surfaced through a statement by the US President rather than an official announcement by the Indian government. “This shows that India’s economic and policy decisions are now being dictated from Washington,” he alleged, questioning whether the government was still in a position to inform its own citizens about major decisions.
The AAP leader further alleged that the US President publicly indicated India would shift oil purchases away from Russia toward the US and Venezuela. According to Singh, such a move would be against India’s interests. He claimed Venezuelan crude is of lower quality and more expensive to refine, while American oil costs significantly more than Russian supplies. He warned that the shift would directly impact consumers, driving up fuel prices and increasing the cost of everyday goods.
Singh also criticized what he described as a decision to allow American agricultural products to enter India at zero duty. He argued that duty-free imports of items such as cotton, wheat, and vegetables would flood Indian markets with cheaper foreign produce, leaving domestic farmers unable to compete. He called the move a step that could push millions of farmers toward economic distress.
Highlighting that a large portion of India’s population depends on agriculture, Singh said the decision amounted to an attack on the backbone of the country’s economy. He compared the situation to the now-repealed farm laws, calling it a similar betrayal of farmers’ trust.
The AAP MP accused sections of the media of portraying the deal as a major achievement while, in his view, it primarily benefits American corporations and farmers. He warned that if the agreement is not rolled back and decisions affecting farmers and the general public are not reconsidered, his party would launch a large-scale protest “from the streets to Parliament.”
There has been no immediate response from the central government to Singh’s allegations.
