
Sitamarhi, Bihar: A troubling case of cyber extortion has surfaced in Sitamarhi, where a local BJP leader fell victim to a glamour trap. The accused demanded ₹5 lakh, threatening to circulate manipulated obscene images if the amount was not paid. Authorities are currently investigating the matter.
Leader Becomes Target of Cybercrime
The victim, Raman Kumar Srivastava, Media In-Charge and Deputy Spokesperson of the Sitamarhi district BJP, reportedly became the target after a road accident left him bedridden and undergoing treatment. Cybercriminals allegedly used Facebook images of Srivastava, editing them to depict him with women, and sent these manipulated images to him via WhatsApp.
Extortion Threats
The cybercriminal demanded ₹5 lakh from Srivastava, threatening to make the fabricated images public if the ransom was not paid. Srivastava, described by acquaintances as a man of impeccable character, emphasized that this attempt is aimed solely at defaming him and extorting money.
Police Complaint Filed
Srivastava has lodged a formal complaint with the local cyber police station. Authorities are investigating the incident under relevant cybercrime provisions. The case highlights the growing menace of digital frauds and the risks posed by online glamour traps, especially targeting prominent individuals.
