BJP Criticizes MP Opposition Leader Umang Singhar Over Claim That Hanuman and Ram’s Army Were Tribals

Bardwani, Madhya Pradesh: The Opposition Leader in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Umang Singhar, has once again sparked controversy with his remarks, claiming that Lord Ram and the Vanara (monkey) army in the Ramayana were actually tribals. He made these statements while addressing a tribal rights conference in Geru Ghati, Sendhwa subdivision, Bardwani district on Wednesday evening.

Singhar’s Statement
Singhar said that while the Ramayana mentions Ram’s army, the Vanaras were later portrayed only as monkeys, whereas in reality, they were forest-dwelling tribal people. Citing the example of Shabari, he questioned whether she was the only tribal woman in the entire forest who fed berries to Ram. He added that Ram’s victory was possible only with the support of tribals.

Hanuman Also a Tribal
Singhar further stated that Hanuman, worshiped across villages in India, was also a Vanara and a tribal. Criticizing the BJP, he referred to a kite-flying depiction of Hanuman by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and questioned if it symbolically targeted tribals. He emphasized that the strength, courage, and culture of tribals must not be undermined.

Political and Social Backlash
This is not the first time Singhar has made contentious remarks about tribal identity, religion, and culture, which have drawn political criticism in the past. Congress leader Jitu Patwari was also present during the event. Following their statements, tribal organizations expressed anger, accusing the Congress leaders of spreading misleading information and attempting to create social divisions. Dr. Relas Senani, BJP Tribal Morcha district president, said that such claims are factually incorrect and divisive.

BJP Response
BJP leaders, including Vikas Arya, son of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes chairman Antar Singh Arya, rejected allegations that the party neglects tribal welfare. They urged Congress leaders to consider regional history and development works before making claims. The tribal organizations reiterated their faith in the Sanatan Hindu tradition and the Constitution.
