Bizarre Theft in Khargone: Burglar Counts Cash, Charges Phone Inside Shop; Entire Act Caught on Camera

Khargone: A peculiar theft in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone district has left traders stunned after a burglar calmly counted stolen cash and even stopped to charge his mobile phone inside the shop he was robbing. The entire episode was captured on CCTV.

The incident occurred at a hardware and building materials store on Narmada Road in Barwah town. According to footage reviewed by the shop owner, the thief broke the lock late at night and entered the premises without haste. After reaching the counter, he opened the drawer, removed the cash, and sat down to carefully count the money before pocketing it.

In a surprising twist, the burglar was seen plugging his mobile phone into a charger inside the shop, appearing completely at ease and unafraid of being caught. He allegedly made off with approximately ₹60,000 to ₹70,000 in cash.

Theft discovered in the morning

Shop owner Patralal Ojha said the break-in came to light around 9 a.m. when he opened the store and found the lock broken and the cash drawer empty. After checking CCTV footage around 11 a.m., the full sequence of events became clear, following which police were informed.

Police examining CCTV footage

The suspect’s face and movements are clearly visible in the recordings, which police say will aid in identification. A case has been registered against an unidentified accused, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the suspect.

Local traders have expressed concern over what they describe as weak night patrolling in the area, claiming such lapses are encouraging theft. They have demanded increased police presence at night. Authorities, however, said the accused would be apprehended soon.

The unusual nature of the crime — marked by the thief’s apparent calm and confidence — has sparked widespread discussion in the town.
