Chhindwara: In a horrifying incident highlighting the continued menace of banned Chinese manjha, a businessman narrowly escaped death after his throat was slashed by a sharp kite string while riding a motorcycle in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. The victim suffered a deep neck injury exposing his food pipe, and his life was saved only due to timely medical intervention and the presence of mind shown by his wife.
The incident occurred on January 2, when Ramgiri Goswami, who runs a bangle and imitation jewellery business, was returning to Chhindwara with his wife on a motorcycle via Chand, Beesapur Kala and Linga villages. As they reached near a liquor shop in Chandan village, a Chinese manjha lying across the road suddenly wrapped around Goswami’s neck.
Food Pipe Exposed, Condition Critical
The razor-sharp string cut deeply into his throat, causing profuse bleeding and leaving the food pipe visible. Goswami lost balance and nearly collapsed on the road. Witnesses described the scene as extremely disturbing.
Doctors later confirmed that the injury was life-threatening and required three separate surgeries at different stages to stabilise his condition. A total of 43 stitches were administered to his neck.
Wife’s Presence of Mind Saves Life
Goswami’s wife, who was riding pillion, acted swiftly and courageously. She immediately tied her dupatta and a handkerchief tightly around his neck to control the bleeding and alerted his friends for help. Due to her quick response, Goswami was rushed to the hospital in time, where emergency treatment began.
Four Days in Hospital, Now Out of Danger
The injured man remained hospitalised for nearly four days. After gradual improvement, he was discharged on Wednesday. Doctors have advised him to remain on a liquid diet for the time being and to avoid solid food. He has also been instructed to take complete rest for at least three months.
Financial Impact on Family
The incident has also caused significant financial strain on Goswami’s family. Medical expenses have already crossed ₹40,000, and due to prolonged bed rest, he will be unable to work for several months. Goswami is the sole breadwinner of the family.
Renewed Concern Over Illegal Chinese Manjha
Despite being banned, Chinese manjha continues to be sold openly in markets, leading to frequent accidents involving pedestrians, bikers and even animals. This incident has once again raised serious questions about enforcement and public safety.
Residents have urged the administration to take strict action against the illegal sale and use of Chinese manjha before more lives are put at risk.
