Usta Art in Motion on the Parade
At the front of the tableau, a striking 180-degree rotating figure of an artist playing the traditional Ravanhatta captivated spectators. On either side, pots, kuppis, and lamps adorned with Usta art were framed attractively. This segment of the tableau stood nearly 13 feet tall, drawing attention from afar.
The trailer portion depicted artisans working on handcrafted kuppis, symbolizing the living tradition of Usta art and the skill passed down through generations. The backdrop featured massive sculptures of camels and camel riders, representing Rajasthan’s desert culture and rural life.
Gair Dance and Gold Embellishments Add Grandeur
The tableau’s arches were adorned with leafy gold inlay samples, demonstrating the intricacy of Usta craftsmanship. Meanwhile, performers of the traditional Gair dance added vibrancy, presenting Rajasthan’s cultural identity in a powerful and dynamic manner. The tableau overall reflected a seamless blend of traditional art, folk culture, and royal heritage.
The Historical Legacy of Usta Art
Usta art, traditionally done on camel leather with gold inlay, traces its origins to Iran and flourished during the Mughal era. It reached Bikaner during the reign of Maharaja Rai Singh, where local artisans gave it a distinct identity. The art form employs 24-carat gold leaf and natural colors, and has now expanded to wood, marble, glass, and wall decorations. Bikaner’s Usta art has also received Geographical Indication (GI) tag recognition.
The Value of a Bikaneri Usta Kuppi
Usta art kuppis, often featuring miniature paintings such as Radha-Krishna, are popular premium gifts among VIPs and foreign tourists. A standard 20-inch kuppi costs approximately ₹45,000 to ₹50,000—making it more expensive than installing an air conditioner at home.
