Bikaner Government Bows to ‘Khejri’ Protest: Hunger Strike Ends, but Demand for Statewide Tree Act Persists

Bikaner: After five days of relentless protests to save the state tree Khejri, activists in Bikaner have achieved a significant victory. The state government has imposed an immediate ban on the felling of Khejri trees in the Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions, prompting protesters to end their hunger strike. However, the movement is far from over, as demonstrators now demand a stringent, statewide “Tree Act.”

Ban on Felling in Jodhpur and Bikaner Divisions
On the fourth day of the agitation, State Minister for Industries K.K. Bishnoi visited the protest site to represent the government. He announced that the state administration has imposed an immediate and complete ban on Khejri tree cutting in Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions. The minister also assured the protesters that the Chief Minister is preparing to introduce a “Tree Act” in the ongoing assembly session. Following this assurance, saints and activists broke their fast after drinking juice.

Why Only Two Divisions? Protesters Question
Although the hunger strike has ended, protesters remain at the site. They argue that environmental protection cannot be partial. “Yesterday, trees were mercilessly cut in Nagaur and Pali. Does their environment not matter?” said one activist. The movement’s demand is clear: protection must extend to the entire state, not just two divisions.

Push for a Statewide Law
The protest has now reached a decisive stage. The key demands are:

  • Immediate ban on the cutting of green trees across all districts of Rajasthan, not just Bikaner and Jodhpur.
  • Passage of the Tree Act in the current assembly session, including strict penalties and jail terms for tree felling.
  • Until the law is enacted, the government should issue an interim administrative order to stop tree cutting in districts like Nagaur and Pali.

Activists insist that the fight to save Rajasthan’s green cover is non-negotiable and will continue until a comprehensive legal framework is in place.
