Bihar’s Legendary “Snake Lady” Janaki Devi: From King Cobras to Community Service, She Commands Respect

Bagaha, Bihar: In the Bisahi village of Valmikinagar, near the Bihar-Nepal border, lives Janaki Devi, famously known as the “Snake Lady.” Despite lacking formal education, Janaki Devi has earned widespread respect for her courage, expertise, and selfless dedication to saving lives from venomous snakes. For years, she has been the region’s frontline protector against snake-related hazards.

Even King Cobras Respect Her
Janaki Devi can identify venomous snakes at a glance—be it cobras, king cobras, or pythons. Leveraging years of hands-on experience, she safely captures and relocates snakes without harm. To date, she has rescued thousands of snakes, handing some over to the forest department while releasing many safely back into the wild.

A Lifelong Commitment
Janaki Devi began handling snakes at the tender age of seven, growing up in a family familiar with these reptiles. Over time, her skill became her signature, earning her a reputation that transcends the village. Even personal tragedy, like the loss of her son during the COVID-19 pandemic, did not deter her from continuing her service to society.

Immune to Danger, Revered by All
She claims to have been bitten over 50 times by venomous snakes but has never suffered serious consequences. Locals often remark that snakes appear calm in her presence, almost as if they recognize her authority. Her fearless approach has made her a near-mythical figure in the region.

Recognition and Choices
About 15 years ago, the Discovery Channel offered her an opportunity to feature her extraordinary skills, but she declined to prioritize her family and village responsibilities. At that time, the forest department often relied on her expertise due to the lack of trained snake catchers. While recent regulations prevent her from officially rescuing snakes, she continues to educate villagers on snakes, forests, and environmental protection, supplementing her livelihood with farm labor.

A Healer Beyond Snakes
Janaki Devi is not just a snake rescuer—she is also skilled in conducting safe and normal deliveries for women in surrounding villages, handling complicated childbirths with confidence. Remarkably, she never charges for her services, believing her talents were given to her for the benefit of society.

From Bagaha to Valmikinagar, Janaki Devi’s unwavering courage and dedication have made her a symbol of respect, trust, and selfless service, inspiring generations across the region.
