Patna, Bihar: Bihar is set to get its first greenfield international airport in Sonpur, Saran district (near Chapra), with the state government approving ₹1,302 crore for land acquisition. Spread over 4,200 acres, the airport is expected to be operational by 2030 and will be capable of handling large aircraft such as the Airbus A380.
Location and Land Acquisition
The airport will be developed in the Dariyapur Chanvar area, located between Hajipur and Dumaria. The allocated land ensures ample space for future expansion and the construction of a world-class airport terminal. The project aims to bridge the connectivity gap between Patna and North Bihar, situated just across the Ganga River, where the development of sufficient bridges will further enhance accessibility.
Why Sonpur Airport is a Game-Changer
- Runway Capacity: Unlike Patna’s Jay Prakash Narayan Airport, which has a shorter runway, the Sonpur airport will have a long, modern runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380.
- Strategic Location: Bihta airport is based on an Air Force facility, limiting its civil operations. Sonpur Airport, located across the Ganga, will provide independent, large-scale international connectivity.
- Direct International Flights: Currently, Bihar residents have limited options for international travel, with only Gaya offering flights to select countries. For destinations such as the US, Gulf countries, or Europe, travelers must go via Delhi or Kolkata. Once operational, Sonpur Airport will enable direct overseas flights from Bihar.
Government Approval and Timeline
During the ongoing Bihar Legislative Assembly budget session, the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, approved 35 major proposals, including key infrastructure and flood control projects. The Sonpur greenfield airport is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity in North Bihar, with a target completion date set for 2030.
This landmark project marks a major step in enhancing Bihar’s air connectivity, opening new avenues for business, tourism, and international travel directly from the state.
