Patna, Bihar – True love, they say, leaves one indifferent to everything else. Such was the story of Satish Prasad Singh, Bihar’s first OBC Chief Minister, who chose love over family and later made a mark in state politics, albeit briefly.
Love Blossoms at College
In 1960, young Satish Prasad Singh, hailing from a wealthy landlord family in Khagaria district, came to Patna for his studies. During his college days at RDJ College, he met Gyanakala, a fellow student, and fell deeply in love. This was no fleeting crush – it was a lifelong bond. When he proposed marriage, Gyanakala accepted, but both families were outraged. The couple faced strong opposition due to caste differences: Satish belonged to the Kushwaha community, while Gyanakala was a Brahmin. Undeterred, they chose love over family approval, breaking away and establishing their own household.
Struggles and Political Journey
The couple’s decision created personal and financial challenges. Satish Prasad Singh sold land to fund his political ambitions. He contested elections from Parbatta Assembly constituency in 1962 and again in 1964 but lost both times. In 1967, he finally won and became Bihar’s sixth Chief Minister – but for only five days.
Historic Decisions in Five Days
Despite his short tenure, Singh’s impact was historic. During his first cabinet meeting, he allowed the sale of potatoes outside the state, benefiting Kushwaha farmers who had previously faced restrictions. This move helped establish the Kushwaha community as a significant political force in Bihar. Today, Satish Prasad Singh is remembered both for his unwavering love story and his brief but notable political contributions.
