Patna, Bihar: A heart-wrenching tragedy struck late Sunday night in Manas Nayapanapur 42 Patti village, under the Akilpur police station area of Danapur constituency, when the roof of a house collapsed, killing five members of the same family in their sleep.
According to local reports, the house — constructed years ago under the Indira Awas Yojana — suddenly gave way around 9:45 p.m. The deceased have been identified as Bablu Khan (32), his wife Roshan Khatoon (30), their son Mohd. Chand (10), daughter Rukhsar (12), and youngest daughter Chandni (2). The family had just finished dinner and gone to bed when the incident occurred, bringing the entire structure crashing down on them.
Villagers rushed to the spot after hearing a loud crash and began rescue efforts amid chaos and panic. The Akilpur police soon arrived and, with the help of locals, managed to pull the victims from the debris. Unfortunately, all five were declared dead on the spot.
Dilapidated House Under Indira Awas Yojana
Residents revealed that the house was built several years ago under the Indira Awas Yojana. Over time, it had become severely dilapidated due to neglect, poor construction, and recent heavy rains that had weakened the walls and roof. Financial constraints prevented the family from repairing the structure, which ultimately led to the tragic collapse. Locals have urged authorities to inspect similar old houses built under the same scheme to prevent future mishaps.
Administration Begins Inquiry
Following the tragedy, local administrative officials reached the site and ordered an immediate inquiry. The Akilpur police station in-charge, Vinod Kumar, confirmed that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem and assured that government compensation and assistance will be provided to the bereaved family.
In Another Incident: Three Students Injured as Roof Portion Collapses in Bagaha
In a separate incident on Sunday, three teenage boys were injured when a section of the roof collapsed at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Residential School in Sidhav village, under Bagaha-2 block of West Champaran district.
According to witnesses, the boys were playing in the school courtyard when the structure suddenly fell, trapping them underneath. Locals quickly rescued the injured and rushed them to the Sub-Divisional Hospital in Bagaha. One of the victims was later referred to Bettiah GMCH for advanced treatment.
The injured were identified as Prince Kumar and Hare Ram, while the identity of the third boy remains unconfirmed. The local administration has initiated an inspection of the school building following the mishap.
