A terrifying incident aboard the Jaynagar–Manihari (15284) Janki Express on Wednesday has raised serious questions about passenger safety on Indian Railways. A woman travelling alone in a reserved sleeper coach was forced to lock herself inside the train’s toilet after 30 to 40 men allegedly barged into the compartment without valid sleeper tickets.
Journey Turns Into Nightmare
According to officials, the woman had boarded the train with a valid reservation and was seated on her designated berth. The situation worsened when the train halted at Katihar Junction, under the Northeast Frontier Railway zone. At this point, a large group of men reportedly forced themselves into the reserved sleeper coach, despite not having appropriate tickets.
Feeling unsafe and threatened, the woman immediately vacated her seat and ran towards the toilet, where she locked herself from inside to prevent any possible mishap.
SOS Message to Railway Helpline
Panicked, the woman sent an emergency message to the Railway Helpline. The alert was forwarded to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) stationed at Katihar Junction. An RPF team rushed to the coach and took swift action.
RPF Inspector Rakesh Kumar said that the unauthorised crowd was removed from the coach and the woman was safely escorted back to her berth.
RPF Admits Severity of Incident
“We had not imagined that a single woman’s journey could turn so serious,” Inspector Kumar said. “She was safely rescued and all unauthorised passengers were evicted from the coach.”
The RPF has since intensified surveillance on platforms and trains to prevent recurrence of such alarming incidents.
