Kishanganj, Jan 14:
A controversial incident involving an inspector of the Bihar Prohibition Department has come under scrutiny after it was revealed that he travelled to Siliguri with two women constables without any official permission or sanctioned leave. The matter surfaced after a roadside altercation during their return journey, prompting a departmental inquiry.
According to official sources, Inspector Sangam Vidyarthi, posted in Kishanganj, allegedly left for Siliguri in a private vehicle along with two women constables, without informing senior अधिकारियों or obtaining prior approval. All three personnel were reportedly marked “on duty” at the time, raising serious questions about the purpose of their trip.
Incident During Return Journey
The matter came to light on Monday evening when the group, while returning from Siliguri to Kishanganj, got into a heated argument with local residents near Bagdogra in Darjeeling district on National Highway-27. The dispute reportedly arose over rash driving and overtaking.
Locals alleged that the speeding private vehicle narrowly avoided causing a serious accident, following which angry residents stopped the car and confronted the occupants. The situation escalated to the point where people erected barricades on the road, leading to a tense standoff.
Bagdogra police soon reached the spot and intervened to defuse the situation. For security reasons, the Prohibition Department personnel were taken to the police station. No written complaint was filed by either side, preventing immediate legal action, but the episode proved damaging enough to expose the unauthorized trip.
Departmental Action Initiated
Following the incident, senior officials of the Kishanganj Prohibition Department took a serious view of the matter. Notices have been issued to Inspector Sangam Vidyarthi and the two women constables, seeking detailed explanations.
Two key questions are at the center of the inquiry:
Why did the inspector travel to Siliguri without official permission?
And if there was no government work involved, why were two women constables accompanying him in a private vehicle while officially on duty?
Prohibition Police Station In-charge Manish Saxena confirmed that explanations have been sought from all concerned personnel. He stated that Prohibition Superintendent Deepak Mishra has taken cognizance of the issue and further action will be decided after reviewing their responses.
Awaiting Final Decision
The incident has embarrassed the department and raised concerns about discipline, misuse of duty status, and unauthorized travel. Officials have indicated that if the explanations are found unsatisfactory, disciplinary action—including departmental punishment—may follow.
For now, all eyes are on the inquiry findings and the department’s final decision, which could set an important precedent regarding accountability and conduct within the force.
