Bihar Weather Update: Daytime Relief, But Fog and Cold Persist at Night

Patna: The Meteorological Department has issued the latest weather update for Bihar. According to forecasts, dense fog is expected in the mornings over the next seven days, while daytime temperatures will provide slight relief from the cold. Nights, however, will continue to experience chilling cold and thick fog, affecting visibility and railway services.

Currently, northwesterly cold winds across Bihar have weakened, bringing some respite from the severe cold. The emergence of bright sunshine during the day has raised temperatures across the state. Nevertheless, mornings and evenings remain cold, with dense fog affecting several districts and causing delays in train operations. In Gopalganj and Bagha, heavy fog early in the morning forced drivers to operate vehicles with headlights on. Residents were seen warming themselves around fires to combat the biting cold. Similar conditions were reported in Aurangabad, where clouds lingered in the sky throughout the morning.

Meteorological Department Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in five districts, including Araria and Purnia. The department predicts cold conditions in these areas during the night and early morning, with fog and mist expected from late night to early morning. Due to poor visibility caused by fog, five trains are currently delayed:

  • Train No. 13247 Ara Capital Express – 2 hours 22 minutes delayed
  • Train No. 12318 Akal Takht Express – 1 hour 55 minutes delayed
  • Train No. 13347 Palamu Express – 55 minutes delayed
  • Train No. 13287 Dakshin Bihar Express – 3 hours 47 minutes delayed

Over the next 24 hours, the minimum temperature across Bihar is expected to range between 8°C and 14°C, while maximum temperatures may reach 22°C to 29°C. The IMD has indicated that the state will experience dry weather for the next seven days, with no rainfall expected.

Dense Morning Fog Expected
Dense morning fog is likely over the next two days, particularly in northeastern and border districts. On Wednesday, districts including Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia, and Katihar may experience heavy fog, whereas Patna and surrounding areas are expected to have mostly clear skies. In the past 24 hours, temperatures in 12 districts fell below 10°C. Recorded minimum temperatures include:

  • Kaimur: 8.4°C
  • Jamui: 8.3°C
  • Jehanabad: 8.2°C
  • Arwal: 9.1°C
  • Lakhisarai: 9.1°C
  • Kishanganj: 8.5°C (lowest)

City-wise Temperature Details
Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 13.6°C and a maximum of 24.6°C, marking the highest minimum temperature for January in the past 15 years. Rajgir recorded a maximum of 27.2°C. According to Ashish Kumar, Director of IMD Patna, reduced wind speeds, increased humidity, and bright sunshine are contributing to warmer daytime conditions, though cold persists in the mornings and evenings.

Experts suggest that temperatures may fluctuate over the next 10 days, with both minimum and maximum temperatures potentially rising by 2°C to 4°C. They also note that if a new western disturbance becomes active towards the end of January or early February, Bihar could experience another cold wave. For now, the impact of the current winter season is gradually easing.
