Patna: Bihar is taking a major leap to nurture sports talent from its villages, aiming to produce players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sania Mirza, and Milkha Singh. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has launched an ambitious plan to construct modern sports grounds at the panchayat level, ensuring that aspiring rural athletes no longer need to leave their villages for quality training.
Empowering Rural Talent
According to officials from the Sports Department, the initiative is designed to identify and develop hidden sporting talent in rural areas, giving every village a platform to produce outstanding athletes. Over the past two years, 4,807 sports grounds have been built across the state—exceeding the initial target of 4,716 gram panchayats. In several panchayats, multiple grounds have been constructed to provide youth with better practice and competitive opportunities.
Plan Progress and Funding
Under the 2024 plan, 4,716 panchayats were included, with a goal to construct 5,341 sports grounds and a budget allocation of ₹521.92 crore. By the end of December, approximately 90% of the target has been achieved, reflecting effective implementation. Additionally, three-tier sports clubs have been established in all gram and nagar panchayats, with elections completed for the positions of president, secretary, and treasurer.
Voices from the Villages
Residents are already expressing optimism about the initiative. Baiju Kumar from Jhitkiya village in Madhepura said, “Earlier, we had to go outside the village for proper training due to the absence of grounds. Now, with sports fields in every panchayat, the dreams of young players are getting a new dimension.” Similarly, Abhinav Anand from Fatehpur village, Patna, added, “The government’s initiative to build sports grounds in villages will greatly support emerging rural athletes in their training.” Brijesh Kevat from Makhdumpur village, Patna, said, “We thank the Chief Minister for constructing panchayat-level sports fields. Now, Bihar’s villages can produce the next Sachin Tendulkar, Ishan Kishan, or Vaibhav Suryavanshi.”
Aiming for a Sporting Revolution
With this plan, Bihar is laying the foundation for a new generation of champions, ensuring that sports talent is nurtured right from the grassroots. The initiative is expected to transform rural Bihar into a hub for future athletes, promoting fitness, competition, and national-level sporting excellence.
