Patna, January 16:
In a major initiative aimed at supporting Biharis living outside the state, the Bihar government has approved the construction of a modern 30-storey Bihar Bhavan in Mumbai, on the lines of the existing Bihar Sadan in Delhi. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹314.20 crore, has received clearance from the state cabinet.
The proposed Bihar Bhavan will be constructed at Elephinstone Estate, an area falling under the Mumbai Port Trust jurisdiction. Spread over approximately 0.68 acres, the high-rise structure will have a height of nearly 69 metres, including basement levels. It has been designed to combine administrative, residential, and meeting facilities within a single integrated complex.
According to officials from the Building Construction Department, the Mumbai Bihar Bhavan will play a crucial role in assisting people from Bihar who travel to the financial capital for medical treatment, especially for serious illnesses such as cancer. Mumbai is home to several premier hospitals, and a large number of patients from Bihar visit the city every year for advanced healthcare.
One of the key features of the project is a 240-bed dormitory facility within the building, specifically meant for patients and their family members. This will provide safe, affordable, and comfortable accommodation, significantly reducing the financial burden on economically weaker families during long treatment periods.
Cabinet Secretary Kumar Ravi said that the project reflects the state government’s commitment to the welfare of Biharis living and working outside the state. “The Mumbai Bihar Bhavan will serve as a vital support system, offering lodging, administrative assistance, and a sense of security to people from Bihar,” he noted.
With this decision, Bihar joins a growing list of states strengthening their presence in major metropolitan cities to better serve their residents. Once completed, the Mumbai Bihar Bhavan is expected to become a landmark facility, symbolising the state’s outreach and care for its people beyond its geographical boundaries.
