Bihar Surges Ahead of National Average in Egg, Milk and Meat Production — Records Nearly 10% Growth in Egg Output

Patna: Bihar has registered an impressive rise in the production of animal-derived products, surpassing the national average across key sectors such as eggs, milk and meat. According to the latest data released by the Union Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the state has recorded nearly 10% growth in egg production, more than double the national growth rate of 4.44%.

Record-Breaking Rise in Egg Production

Additional Chief Secretary of the Animal and Fisheries Resources Department, N. Vijayalakshmi, addressed a press conference in Patna, highlighting the state’s remarkable progress.
She said, “All three animal-derived products showed such significant growth last year that Bihar has now outpaced the national average in their annual growth rates.”

During the fiscal year 2024–25:

  • Milk production grew by 4.24% (national average: 3.58%)
  • Egg production increased by 9.99% (national average: 4.44%)
  • Meat production rose by 4.03% (national average: 2.46%)

Higher Per Capita Availability for Bihar Residents

Vijayalakshmi added that per capita availability of milk, eggs and meat has also improved notably.

  • Milk availability increased from 277 grams/day (2023–24) to 285 grams/day (2024–25)
  • Per capita annual egg availability rose from 27 to 29
  • Meat availability increased from 3.19 kg/year to 3.27 kg/year

This jump reflects better livestock management, expanded dairy initiatives and enhanced poultry production across the state.

Bihar Ranks 6th in Milk Production Growth Nationwide

Speaking at the conference held at Vikas Bhawan Secretariat, Vijayalakshmi noted that Bihar now stands 6th in the country for annual milk production growth. Fisheries production has also seen a major boost.
The state, which was ranked ninth in fish production in 2013–14, is projected to reach fourth place nationally in 2023–24, marking a decade of consistent progress.

Bihar’s rapid growth in dairy, poultry and meat production signals rising rural incomes, strengthened livestock health programs and an emerging model of agricultural diversification — placing the state firmly on the national map for agri-based development.
