Bihar Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh Shares Her Vision in an Exclusive NBT Interview

Patna: Bihar’s Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh recently spoke exclusively with Navbharat Times Digital, revealing her plans and ambitions to transform sports infrastructure in the state. A trained shooter herself, Minister Singh emphasized improving facilities and opportunities for athletes, ensuring they no longer need to travel outside Bihar for training.

Boosting Sports Infrastructure in Bihar:
When asked about the proposed Water Sports Academy in Banka, Singh explained that the aim is to provide world-class training within Bihar itself. “Bihar has immense talent. Our goal is to develop the academy in phases so that it eventually becomes a national-level training center. Just as Rajgir hosts international hockey events, Banka will also emerge as a hub for water sports,” she said.

A Personal Milestone:
Reflecting on her swearing-in as Minister, Singh shared, “The first phone call I received after taking the oath was a mix of joy and responsibility. Initially, I was unaware of my portfolio, but soon realized the significance of taking oath as a sports minister while being an athlete myself. Interestingly, I took my oath on 20th November, the same date when my father, the late Digvijay Singh, was sworn in as a Union Minister in 1990–92. It was a deeply emotional coincidence.”

Cricket and Sporting Excellence:
When asked about cricket in Bihar, Singh said, “Although I have been in office for only a month, considerable improvements are already underway. The construction of a new cricket stadium at Rajgir is progressing, alongside our Centre of Excellence, which supports hockey, athletics, and weightlifting. Once infrastructure develops, outdated practices will be corrected, and opportunities for players will increase.”

Personal Life and Priorities:
Addressing questions about her personal life, including her much-discussed marriage plans, Singh said, “I will marry when the right time comes and the right person is found. Right now, my focus is on sports and athletes.”

Top Priority – Infrastructure for Athletes:
Shreyasi Singh emphasized that her foremost priority is building infrastructure so that athletes in Bihar have access to world-class facilities within the state itself. “Our athletes should not have to travel outside Bihar for training or competition. This is the foundation of our vision,” she added.

Through her proactive approach and commitment, Bihar’s Sports Minister aims to create a thriving ecosystem for athletes, nurturing talent that could shine on national and international stages.
