Hajipur, Bihar: The mysterious death of BPSC teacher Priya Bharti in Vaishali district has raised serious questions about possible foul play. Although her body was found hanging in a rented room along with a purported suicide note, her family alleges that she was a victim of dowry-related murder. Priya’s mother claims that her daughter was killed over a demand for ₹5 lakh and a vehicle.
Family Rejects Suicide Claim
“She could never have committed suicide. My daughter was very strong. She was murdered, and her body was hung to destroy evidence,” said Priya’s mother, Indrakala Bharti. Priya’s body was discovered on 26 January in her rented room in Sehan village under the Katraha police station. Despite the presence of a suicide note, the family contends that the handwriting does not match Priya’s and insists this was a calculated attempt to disguise murder as suicide. A FIR has been registered against Priya’s husband, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and nephew on charges of dowry murder.
Suspicious Suicide Note
The note reportedly read, “Mom and Dad, sorry! I have no disputes with anyone.” Indrakala Bharti dismissed this as fake, saying her daughter was mentally strong and would never take her own life. The family alleges the note was fabricated to cover up evidence of murder.
A Mother’s Final Wish Ignored
In the note, Priya had explicitly requested that her body not be taken to her marital home in Rasulpur and that her funeral be conducted in Hajipur. Most poignantly, she wished that her three-month-old daughter, not her husband, perform the last rites. This final wish has stirred societal and legal concerns over respect for the deceased’s intentions.
Daughter Separated Before Death
Priya married Deepak, a private bank manager from Raxaul, on 16 November 2024. Her mother alleged that soon after the marriage, her in-laws demanded ₹5 lakh and a vehicle. On 15 January, Priya’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law forcibly took her three-month-old daughter away, leaving Priya alone in her rented room. A day before her death, Priya reportedly called home, crying, saying she had been threatened and assaulted.
Signs of Physical Assault at Hospital
The family claims that when they were informed of Priya’s death on 26 January, the body was rushed to the district hospital before they could arrive. Indrakala Bharti said Priya’s head bore deep wounds, indicating a struggle.
Body Seized and Dumped in River
Priya’s cousin Ajit Bharti alleged that while attempting to take the body home for last rites, Priya’s husband Deepak, along with around 50 men allegedly backed by political influence, intercepted them. They forcibly seized the body and dumped it in the middle of the river at Konhara Ghat, allegedly to destroy evidence.
Eyewitness Account
Auto driver Ajay Kumar, who used to drop Priya to school daily, said he knocked on her door on the morning of 26 January but received no response. Two hours later, he learned of her death. Katraha police have registered a case and begun forensic analysis of the suicide note, along with tracking down the accused.
