Bihar Shocker: Grandmother Sold Newborn for ₹50,000; Baby Returned After 13 Days as Buyer Surrenders to Police

In a shocking incident that has shaken public conscience, a newborn baby who was sold just hours after birth in Bihar’s Bhojpur district has been safely reunited with his mother after 13 days, following intense police action. The case exposes a well-organized child trafficking racket operating across Bihar and Jharkhand.

The infant was sold soon after birth on December 7 outside Agiaon Primary Health Centre. The deal was allegedly struck for ₹4.50 lakh, out of which ₹3.50 lakh had already been paid to a rural doctor acting as a middleman. However, under mounting police pressure, the woman who bought the baby—Poonam Sharma, a resident of Ramgarh district in Jharkhand—arrived at Garhani police station and handed over the newborn voluntarily.

As the baby was brought to the police station, the child’s mother, Khusboo Kumari, broke down in tears and hugged her son tightly, overwhelmed with relief and joy. The emotional reunion moved everyone present.

Seven Arrested, Inter-State Racket Exposed

So far, seven people have been arrested in the case. Police investigations revealed that all accused are part of a larger organized gang involved in buying and selling newborns for hefty sums. The network’s links extend from Bihar to Jharkhand, and police are now probing previous incidents connected to the gang.

Poonam Sharma has been sent to judicial custody, while further interrogation of other accused is underway. Police officials stated that the accused may be taken on remand if necessary to uncover the full extent of the trafficking network.

Family Betrayal Behind the Crime

The case originated from Narayanpur village under Garhani police station area. Khusboo Kumari and her husband Chitranjan Kumar had entered into a love marriage, which reportedly angered Chitranjan’s mother, Krinta Devi. Fueled by resentment and an intention to separate the couple, Krinta Devi allegedly conspired to sell her own newborn grandson for money—an act that has stunned the entire region.

Police said Krinta Devi received help from a neighbor and relatives, who together handed over the baby to a rural doctor, Dilip alias Harishankar Pandit, who later sold the child to buyers in Jharkhand.

Police Pressure Forced Baby’s Return

After Khusboo Kumari filed an FIR on December 16, police swung into action and arrested Krinta Devi along with several accomplices, including a home guard constable and a medical assistant. These arrests proved crucial, as sustained pressure led the main accused doctor to surrender. Based on his confession, two more associates were arrested from Aurangabad and Piro.

During interrogation, the accused disclosed that the baby had been sold to a woman in Jharkhand. Fearful of arrest as police raids intensified, the buyer finally surrendered and returned the baby safely.

Police officials stated that strict legal action will be taken against all those involved, calling the incident “a grave crime against humanity.”
