Bihar Set to Get Three New Nuclear Power Plants; NPCIL & NTPC Begin Survey Work

In a major push to boost nuclear energy production in Bihar, the central government has initiated preparations to establish three new nuclear power plants in the state. The NPCIL-NTPC joint team has begun preliminary surveys at potential sites in Siwan, Banka, and Rajouli (Nawada) to assess feasibility and safety parameters.

Survey Work Underway

The survey team is evaluating critical factors, including seismic activity, water availability, land adequacy, population density, and geological stability, to ensure that the proposed plants meet technical and environmental standards.

Bihar’s Home Minister, Samrat Chaudhary, shared the development on social media platform X, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s energy infrastructure.

Key Assessment Parameters

  • Seismicity: Assessing earthquake risk and structural safety.
  • Water Availability: Ensuring sufficient water supply for cooling and operational needs.
  • Land Availability: Securing adequate land for large-scale plant construction.
  • Population Density: Ensuring compliance with safety standards relative to nearby communities.
  • Ground Conditions: Evaluating geological stability for construction feasibility.

Once the survey is completed, the joint team will submit a detailed report to the central and state governments.

Significance of the Project

This initiative is part of India’s ambitious goal to achieve 100 GW of nuclear energy production nationwide. The establishment of three nuclear plants in Bihar will not only meet the state’s growing energy demands but also contribute significantly to national energy security and the promotion of clean, sustainable energy sources.
