Bihar Railways Activates High-Tech Safety Systems Amid Fog and Cold

Patna, Bihar: With plummeting temperatures and dense fog expected across Bihar, the Railways have activated their advanced winter safety systems to ensure passenger safety and smooth operations. The Eastern Central Railway (ECR) has launched an extensive winter safety campaign from Monday, particularly targeting fog-prone sections under the Danapur Division, where visibility has deteriorated significantly.

Enhanced Safety Measures for Cold and Fog
According to Saraswati Chandra, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of ECR, nearly 40% of stations under the Danapur Division fall in areas susceptible to dense fog. In response, safety protocols have been strengthened. A GPS-based winter safety system has been deployed, providing locomotive pilots with real-time alerts on upcoming signals, speed restrictions, and track conditions, ensuring proactive operational management.

Special Training for Locomotive Pilots
CPRO Chandra added that specialized advisory sessions are being conducted for locomotive pilots, emphasizing vigilance during night shifts when sudden drops in visibility may occur. “The Railways have implemented a multi-layered winter safety framework to mitigate fog-related risks. Technological upgrades combined with enhanced human alertness will ensure safe and efficient train operations,” he said.

Fog Precautions to Continue Until February
To improve physical visibility, ECR has installed high-intensity flashlights, retro-reflective posts, visibility testing objects (VTOs), and freshly painted track-side lines at critical points. These markers help locomotive crews gauge distance and track alignment even when dense fog reduces visibility to a few meters, particularly in fog-affected areas of Danapur Division and NCR zones. Where necessary, speed restrictions, enhanced vigilance, continuous monitoring, and frequent track patrolling will remain in effect throughout the winter, extending until the end of February.

This proactive approach underscores the Railways’ commitment to passenger safety and uninterrupted train services during Bihar’s harsh winter season.
